Plenty of central Mississippi homes were built with a carport instead of a garage. A carport keeps the sun off your car, but it doesn’t keep out rain blowing sideways, pollen, leaves or anyone walking by. Enclosing your carport and adding a garage door gives you a secure, covered space for vehicles, tools and storage. It also updates the look of your home. If you’ve been thinking about how to convert a carport to a garage, this is where to start.
Carport enclosures go back to the roots of Partridge Door Company. Our company history describes the time when homeowners first started wanting to enclose carports and install garage doors, and how the electric openers that followed led to the founding of Partridge Door Opener Service in November 1979. More than four decades later, carport enclosures are still one of our services.
Why enclose a carport?
- Security. A closed, locking garage door protects your vehicles, tools, bikes and lawn equipment.
- Protection from the weather. Keep wind-driven rain, pollen, leaves and sun off your car.
- Usable space. An enclosed garage can double as a workshop or storage area.
- Curb appeal. A well-chosen garage door can transform the front of an older home.
- Convenience. Add an automatic opener and you never have to get out in the rain again.
How a carport enclosure works
Every carport is different, so each project starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at the size and structure of your carport, measure the opening, and talk through the options. A typical enclosure includes building in the opening to fit a garage door, then installing the door, springs, tracks and opener.
During the estimate we’ll go over exactly what your project involves.
Choosing the door
Since you’re adding a garage door to the front of the house, the door choice matters. We install residential doors from Amarr, Clopay, C.H.I. and Wayne Dalton:
- Insulated steel doors. Durable, low maintenance and available in many styles and colors. → Insulated Garage Doors
- Carriage house doors. A good match for traditional and older homes. → Custom & Carriage House Doors
- Windows and decorative hardware to match your home’s style.

Add an opener
Most carport enclosures are finished with an automatic opener. We’ve been an original Genie Authorized Installing and Servicing Dealer since 1979, and we also install LiftMaster and Linear openers. → Opener Installation
Where we enclose carports
Older neighborhoods throughout central Mississippi are full of carports, especially in established parts of Clinton, Jackson, Raymond and Pearl. We offer carport enclosures in Clinton, Jackson, Madison, Ridgeland, Brandon, Pearl, Flowood, Byram, Raymond and Vicksburg.
Carport enclosure FAQ
Can any carport be enclosed?
Many can, but it depends on the structure, the roof height and the opening size. We’ll look at your carport during a free estimate and tell you what’s possible.
Do I need a permit to enclose my carport?
Permit requirements depend on your city or county. Check with your local building department, and with your HOA if you have one.
Will an enclosed carport need power for an opener?
Yes. An automatic opener needs an electrical outlet near the ceiling. We’ll talk about power for the opener during your estimate.
How do I get started?

How much does it cost to enclose a carport?
It depends on the carport’s size and structure, how much framing the opening needs, and the garage door and opener you choose. We’ll give you a free on-site estimate.
Can a carport have a garage door?
Yes, if the opening is framed to support one. Enclosing the carport and adding a garage door is exactly what we do, and we’ll check the roof height and structure first.
