You press the button, the opener strains, and the door doesn’t move, or rises a few inches and stops. Maybe you heard a loud bang from the garage earlier. That’s the classic sign of a broken garage door spring, and it’s one of the most common calls we get at Partridge Door Company in Clinton, Jackson and across central Mississippi.
The good news is that most of the time we can replace a broken spring the same day you call. Don’t get stuck in your garage. Call (601) 372-4874.
Why springs break
Your garage door springs, not the opener, do the heavy lifting. They’re wound or stretched to balance the weight of the door so it can be lifted with little effort. Each time the door opens and closes, the spring goes through a cycle. Eventually the steel fatigues and breaks. It usually happens without warning, often after years of daily use.
There are two main types:
- Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the door opening. When one breaks, you’ll often see a visible gap in the coil.
- Extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. They’re common on older and lighter doors.
We handle torsion spring replacement and extension spring replacement on garage doors of all makes and models.
What to do when a spring breaks
- Stop using the opener. Running it against a door with a broken spring can strip the gear or burn out the motor.
- Don’t try to lift the door by hand or prop it open. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is in play, and it can fall.
- Keep people and pets away from the door and its hardware.
- Call a professional. Springs hold a lot of stored energy. Winding, unwinding or adjusting them without the right tools and training causes serious injuries.
Garage door spring replacement: how we do it
When we arrive, we’ll inspect the door and figure out what spring your door needs for its size and weight. We replace the broken spring, check the cables, drums, rollers and hinges that took extra stress when it broke, and balance and test the door. If your door has two springs and only one broke, we’ll talk with you about replacing the pair.
We’ll also check the opener. A broken spring sometimes damages the opener’s drive gear. We stock gear kits for LiftMaster, Sears and Chamberlain openers, along with LiftMaster, Genie and Linear parts.

Broken spring FAQ
Can you replace my garage door spring today?
Most of the time, yes. Call early in the day if you can.
Is it safe to replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. Garage door springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury if they release unexpectedly. Spring replacement is a job for a trained technician with the proper tools.
My car is stuck in the garage. What should I do?
Don’t force the door. Call (601) 372-4874, explain that you’re trapped, and we’ll do our best to get you out quickly.
Will a new spring fix my opener?
Often, yes. Once the door is balanced again, many openers work normally. If the opener was damaged while straining against the door, we can repair or replace it on the same visit. → Opener Repair & Installation
How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring?
It depends on the spring type (torsion or extension), whether your door has one spring or two, the size and weight of the door, and whether cables or other parts were damaged. Call (601) 372-4874 with your door details and we’ll explain what to expect.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
It isn’t safe. Without a working spring, the door’s full weight is in play. It can be very heavy to lift and can drop suddenly. Running the opener can damage it too. Leave the door closed and call us.
Is it worth fixing a garage door spring?
In most cases, yes. Replacing springs puts the door back in balance and usually costs far less than a new door. If the door itself is badly damaged or worn out, we’ll tell you so you can decide.
Is your work covered by a warranty?
Yes. All of our products and services come with a 1-year warranty, followed by the manufacturers’ warranties.
